It amazes me how the toys and cartoons that I played with as a child have come back in popularity. While I once played with Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake and Transformers – my kids are now playing with them. Perhaps they never truly vanished, I just stopped noticing them. Now that my children are into toys and videos, I’m just shocked at how much and how little has changed from my own childhood. Of course, the dolls and gadgets have been modernized and look much better than how I remember them.

My four-year old daughter has become quite smitten with Strawberry Shortcake. We’ve managed to collect quite a few videos and dolls. Since Strawberry Shortcake has become her hero, she wants everything in her world to be pink or somehow directly involved with the little cartoon girl. At her birthday party, I think all of her friends and relatives gave her something that was Strawberry Shortcake themed. She now has sheets, coloring books, clothes, toys and so much more. Somehow, she’s managed to play with all of them. Of course, since her brother won’t touch anything pink, she cons her parents into playing with her. I can’t say that I mind. She loves to wear anything pink, because that’s the chosen color of her hero. Prior to watching Strawberry Shortcake, she never cared for strawberries. Suddenly, strawberries have become her favorite fruit and snack. Another healthy outcome from allowing her to have a new hero in her world.

Strawberry Shortcake isn’t a bad hero for children. Though you never see the parents of the little kids, they manage to care for themselves rather well. The cartoons and videos are all wholesome and appropriate for any age. They have themes that children can relate to and even pick up a few new concepts and nice habits. I won’t ever complain about letting my daughter learn about sharing and caring. I’m also not as retentive about how much television she watches as long as I know that she’s watching something that is age appropriate and prompts learning. I don’t use my television as a means of babysitting my children, but letting her watch Strawberry Shortcake is absolutely fine, in my opinion.

I’m hoping that she doesn’t decide in a few months that her hero is going to be someone else. With all of the things in our household that are now pink or strawberry themed, I’d hate to have to redecorate anytime soon!
